Mary Burtenshaw

Mary Burtenshaw was born in London in 1972. She studied Fine Art at the Norwich School of Art and Design graduating with a Fine Art B.A (Hons) in 1994. She now lives near London. She currently combines her passion for painting with a career in publishing and has created and illustrated several children books. After several years of not painting she has recently returned to her first love of using pastels to create evocative landscapes which are at the same time both strong and gentle.

She paints dramatic impressionist and abstract pastel landscapes which are inspired by her love of the countryside and the many and varied places she has visited, creating the atmosphere and feeling of a place with the use of texture and light. Her landscapes are in soft pastels on watercolour paper which give an intensity of colour and a strong texture but also the soft contours that suit the space and changing mood of her subject matter. She has been greatly influenced by many different artists and also her grandfather Geo Ray Burtenshaw a landscape artist. She continues to always explore the use of her medium.

Mary has recently and is currently exhibiting in the Cotswolds, Midlands and Hampshire
