In her new work created during the lockdown, artist Cristina Schek fuses the real with the surreal permeating the everyday life in isolation with a sense of mystery.

The title of Cristina’s latest work ‘Florence Lightingale a tribute to The Lady with the Lamp’ reveals the breadth of inspiration that she identified in her surrounding environment during those days.

Cristina presented her work as a large format Lightbox which captured the imagination of a collector only a short time after displaying it in our window. This work is part of a larger series she will be releasing more of this year.

Florence Nightingale /ˈnaɪtɪŋɡeɪl/, OM, RRC, DStJ (12 May 1820 – 13 August 1910) was an English social reformer, statistician and the founder of modern nursing. Nightingale came to prominence while serving as a manager and trainer of nurses during the Crimean War, in which she organised care for wounded soldiers. She gave nursing a favourable reputation and became an icon of Victorian culture.

Florence gained the nickname 'the Lady with the Lamp' during her work at Scutari. 'The Times' reported that at night she would walk among the beds, checking the wounded men holding a light in her hand.

The image of 'the Lady with the Lamp' captured the public's imagination and Florence soon became a celebrity. One of the main creators of the Nightingale cult was Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, who immortalised her in his poem 'Santa Filomena'.

'A Lady with a lamp shall stand.

In the great history of the land,

A noble type of good,

Heroic Womanhood'.'

Santa Filomena'

by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, 1857
